Spreadsheets have found ubiquitous use by scientists, business and financial analysts, researchers, and lay users. However, spreadsheets cannot express complex operations (e.g., joins), cannot handle large datasets, do not support collaboration, and foster errors, redundancy, and stale data. On the other hand, relational databases are well-known to be powerful and scalable, but are not flexible, intuitive, and interactive. DataSpread addresses these limitations by holistically unifying spread-sheets with databases: preserving spreadsheets as the front-end, and databases as the back-end.

In this visualization, we highlight joint attention, the synchronizing of attention of two or more people¹. Lack of joint attention can be a warning sign for development delays, which can lead to early diagnosis and intervention. The visualization highlights the quick glances of children that can be interpreted as bids for attention - a strong indicator for joint attention. This not only allow users to detect joint attention but also easily observe patterns by comparing the visualizations across a population of children.

Book of Health

Issued by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the challenge is to create a universal healthcare record to accurately track a child's immunization schedule and save lives. The Book of Health is a design proposal for a universal healthcare record. Its goal is to save lives by making doctors, caretakers, and children active agents in the child's immunization schedule and healthcare.

We present a system to visualize the annotations of videos of children engaged in a 3–5 minute interactive protocol that assesses communicative behavior, the Rapid ABC. Rapid ABC session videos are annotated to capture the child’s gestures, gaze, and vocalization — important developmental indicators for a young child. From these annotations, we create a graphical fingerprint for each session. In doing so, we introduce Plexlines, a technique for visualizing multiple types of information layered compactly as timelines.

Diversity at Illinois

Historic student enrollment data at Illinois was visualized in a map in this project. It provides a detailed break down of gender, race, and college level data at various geographic levels. Users are able to interact with the data at all levels while the visualization provides a unique view of Illinois demographics.

Global Pulse

A visualization of popular music around the world. Top 5 songs for each country (for week 4 of 2013) were selected and represented as a single pulse. The music ranking was retrieved from both last.fm and itunes, and the attributes used in the pulse were collected from echonest. The music is streamed from youtube.

Cinematic Fingerprints

Several films have been converted to a simple visual representation with its visual and audio attributes. Each fingerprint contains hints regarding the scene palette, presence of dialog, and audio levels. Using this clues, take your best guess at which movie it's been captured from.
